EVEN STEVENS by Carol Smith-Allen

Blues gained a point, in this hard fought tie, against ex-conference side Kettering Town, who came into this match on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Hayes at home.

The poppies got off to an excellent start, taking the lead on 3 minutes, when a shrewd pass from Paul Fewings left his strike partner Ellis Remy to rifle the ball home.

Despite this early setback, Blue’s then began to take more control of the game, with two corners and several chances in the next 10 minutes. Then in the 15th minutes Blue’s got the equaliser they had been striving for, when Poppies keeper Gavin Kelly, dropped the ball following a shot at goal, and Danny Hazleden was on hand to hit the rebound home.

Just prior to their goal Blue’s had made a substitution, with Lee Williams replacing Eddie Youds, who I can only imagine had taken a knock. The remainder of the first half, saw play continue at a lively pace, with both sides having opportunities to score, but failing to make them count.

The second half started with the Poppies dominating, but Blue’s soon got ‘stuck-in’, with play then becoming a bit scrappy. During the first 20 minutes of this half there were chances for Freddy Eastwood and Leroy Griffiths, but both shot just over. Then in the 21st minute, Blue’s could have taken the lead, when Leroy put in an excellent cross for Freddy, whose shot was met with an absolutely fantastic save from Gavin Kelly.

There then followed a period of about 10-15 minutes in which the Poppies really dominated the play, pushing forward and exerting pressure on Blue’s, but Blue’s then fought back, causing the last 5-10 minutes to be very tense indeed.

So, at the final whistle, it was a point a piece, and with Blue’s edging the first half and the Poppies the second, it was a fair result. As a team Blue’s are playing some great football, but it is evident that despite creating plenty of chances, Blue’s need to score more goals; having said that Poppies keeper Gavin Kelly, did have a very good game. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Another game that we should have won although their keeper had the game of his life, we are playing some great football but really must score more goals.

Well played against Kettering. Leroy looked very sharp up front. Let's keep it that way. However, should somebody with the skill that Freddie Eastwood obviously has, need constant mothering to get him to put in any effort?
