Grays Athletic 0 vs Ford 3 (Away)
Sat, October 18, 2003. Kick off: 3:00 PM
FORD ARE FOCUSED by Carol Smith-Allen
Blue’s suffered a real ‘off’ day on Saturday up at the Oakside Stadium, allowing the Motormen to deservedly take all three points. Ford showed considerably more desire and passion than Blue’s, and that’s what really made the difference between the sides.
Chances for Blue’s in the first half were few and far between. The best came on 15 minutes when a Ram Marwa free kick dropped into the 6 yard box, and following a goalmouth scramble, Richard Halle cleared the ball off the line. From the resulting corner Eddie Youds headed over. Ford then went immediately to the other end and scored. A low cross from Glenn Poole found Sammy Cooper who hit home from 10 yards.
With their tails now well and truly up, Ford were striving to increase their lead, and a shot from Richard Halle saw Mel Capleton at full stretch to tip over. A minute later and Mel made another excellent save from a 30 yard shot by Sammy Cooper.
Blues did have another chance just before half time with a Ram Marwa free-kick being pushed away by Jamie Lunan for a corner. With just a minute to go before the interval Ford had their last chance of the half, when Mervyn Abrahams passed to Glenn Poole whose cross into the box was eventually cleared to safety by the Gray’s defence.
The second half started, as the first had finished, with Ford continuing to dominate the game, and there were early chances for both Glenn Poole and Mervyn Abrahams.
Then on 51 minutes came Blue’s best chance of the match, when following a goalmouth scramble, Freddy Eastwood’s shot completely crossed the line, before being cleared by Jamie Lunan. However, none of the officials appeared to see this, and therefore a goal was not given.
A few minutes later, Ford increased their lead, when Mel Capleton’s clearance hit Martin Carthy and rebounded back into the net for an own goal. Perhaps this was an indication that when Blue's could have done with a bit of good fortune, it just wasn't going to happen.
Ford continued to be first to nearly every ball, and Mervyn Abraham almost made it 3 after his diving header from a Glenn Poole free kick went just wide. Then on 72 minutes, the motormen made victory certain, when a Ronnie Watson cross was perfectly met on the half-volley by Alex Fiddes, whose 25 yard strike whizzed past Mel Capleton into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Eight minutes before the end, Blue’s came close to gaining a consolation goal when a Dean Bradshaw’s long shot hit the far post.
For Blue’s fans the final whistle couldn’t come quick enough, and I cannot help but wondering what caused such a woeful display. Maybe, complacency and over-confidence following such a good string of results recently, or perhaps a lack of focus as sights are set on the FA Cup Tie against Margate. Whatever, the reason lets hope it’s rectified on Tuesday night when we are at home to St. Albans.
