GRAYS CATCH FISHER HOOK LINE AND SINKER
by David Jarvis

A goal in either half from new Blue Jamie Martin and another in the first half from Danny Hayzelden secured Grays' place in the second round of the FA Trophy tonight.

Traffic snarl-ups around the Rotherhithe Tunnel delayed one of the linesmen, ace Grays striker Leroy Griffiths and this reporter (again!) so the game kicked off more than 15 minutes late.

The first half was notable only for the two Grays goals. In the 32nd minute, Ram Marwa drifted in a free kick from the left. After an aerial challenge with a Fisher defender, the ball fell kindly for Jamie Martin and from 5 yards he made no mistake.

Then just 4 minutes later, a great first touch from Marwa took him past the last defender on the right. Danny Hayzelden appeared at the near post to slot home Marwa's fizzing low cross with the simplest of touches. Blues were cruising and despite missing key players throughout the team, looked lively going forward and strong at the back.

Fisher started the second half with renewed vigour but were finding it difficult to create clear cut chances. Meanwhile at the other end, Martin turned provider for Marwa, but his effort was smothered by the Fisher keeper Michael Holder.

The killer blow for Fisher came in the 633rd minute. Jamie Martin making a name for himself with a turn and shot in the Fisher box which came off the far post and in for 3-0.

With the game out of reach of the home side, the midfield battles became scrappier. Referee Mr Woodward proved one of the most lenient officials I have witnessed despite some late tackles from both sides.

Nevertheless, in the end, Grays were easy victors, securing a place in the next round away to either Banstead Athletic or Aylesbury United and setting themselves up nicely for Saturday's FA Cup clash at home to Aldershot.

Grays Athletic: Capleton, Bruce, Robinson, Olayinka, Bradshaw, Thurgood, Marwa, Williams, Hayzelden, Lock, Martin Subs: Griffith, Lunan, Heberay

No Freddie Eastwood?! Still nice to put Saturday's disappointment behind us.

Great report DJ.
