THE TERRAS 'TORMENT' BLUES by Carol Smith-Allen

On the back of their relatively easy victory over Margate, Blues struggled and had to work hard at the Wessex Stadium to earn themselves a point against a Weymouth side that were looking to improve on their indifferent start to the season.

Weymouth made it difficult for Blues to play their usual passing game, and during the first half the ball spent a considerable amount of time up in the air, and also out of play. However, it was the Terras who created the better chances. The first of which came on 10 minutes when England semi-professional international Adam Wilde found Steve Tully with a long cross-field pass. The ball was flicked inside to Shaun Wilkinson who blazed over the bar from 7 yards.

Chances then came and went for Cole (Grays), and Phillips (Weymouth) before Wilde on 36 minutes wasted a golden opportunity when finding himself in ‘acres’ of space by blasting well over. Blues then had their best chance of the half when having beaten his defender Griffiths’ pass found Brennan, but the midfielder’s shot produced an excellent full-stretch save from Weymouth keeper Jason Matthews.

Almost immediately, The Terras took the lead; Robbie Pethick’s accurate cross found Chukki Eribenne in the box. The former Bournemouth striker then side-stepped Blue’s keeper Emberson, and slotted home.

Second half play was even and very much end to end. On 54 minutes Weymouth came incredibly close to increasing their lead when Wilkinson’s shot went narrowly wide, having been put through by Phillips.

However, minutes later Blues almost drew level. Substitute Freddy Eastwood’s (he replaced Liam George on 51 minutes) 18 yard shot hit the woodwork. Blues then made their second substitution on 61 minutes, Vill Powell replacing Cole, and shortly afterwards the Weymouth Manager Steve Claridge, journeyman footballer and well-known face, came off the bench to replace Eribenne.

Blues efforts finally bore fruit in the 75th minute much to the delight of the die-hard fans who had made the long journey. Eddie Youds, having given another commanding performance, rose above the Weymouth defence to head home from Dean Brennan’s corner.

In the closing minutes both side had half-chances, but neither could make one count.
