BLUES CRASH OUT OF FA CUP
by David Jarvis

Grays’ FA Cup dream died abruptly this afternoon against plucky Ryman Premier outfit Wealdstone. A weakened Blues side missing defensive lynchpin Eddie Youds and star striker Freddy Eastwood never managed to get a grip on the game despite going ahead after 20 minutes through Vill Powell.

Grays failed to capitalise on their lead and within 12 minutes Blues’ shaky defence gifted a goal to Stones striker Marvin Morgan to bring the scores level.

Two goal bound efforts cleared off the line by the Stones defence soon after signalled this was not to be Blues’ afternoon.

In the second half an already scrappy game got even scrappier and more was seen of referee Mr Salt’s yellow card than of any real goalmouth incident.

Grays made three substitutions going into the last 15 minutes but these failed to change the shape of the game.

Then on 80 minutes having given away a clumsy free kick, the Grays defence allowed Richard Jolly space. The Wealdstone man gratefully collected the ball, turned Grays keeper Carl Emberson and slotted home to put Stones ahead.

Finally Emberson needlessly tripped Jolly just 2 minutes later giving Wealdstone the opportunity to put the nail in the coffin of Grays’ Cup hopes.

This third away defeat in four games will give manager Mark Stimson plenty to think about going into Tuesday’s Carthium Cup away game at Redbridge.
