Match Report by Martin Candler
On a bitterly cold evening at the New Rec, Grays overcame a spirited performance by their Essex neighbours Bowers & Pitsea. Fielding their now customary mix of squad players, triallists and a sprinkling of the youth team the Blues took time to settle. Gary Hooper, Ade Olayinka and Tom Williamson all missed presentable chances as Grays, prompted by Bertie Brayley and Williamson, took control of the game. In spite of playing some pleasing football, it was not until 7 minutes into the second half that the Blues opened their account by way of a thunderous shot by Glenn Poole into the top corner of the net. Then Brayley somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar from close-in after being set up by Hooper.
In the 71st minute Hooper doubled Grays; lead with a headed goal from Poole's cross. Despite sticking gamely to their task Bowers could find no reply. Blues fans after the game praised the visitors sporting approach but recognized that Grays; superior fitness and fire-power won the day.
