At Chelmsford’s new Melbourne Park home in front of a good-size crowd the Blues seemed to have Saturday’s Trophy game with Kidderminster on their minds as they turned in a timid performance. Any side turned out by former Grays manager Craig Edwards you would expect to be fired- up for the occasion, particularly with a smattering of ex-Blues in their line-up. Craig provided some entertainment for the travelling fans when he got involved in a heated, theatrical touchline row with referee Mr. Beck and was banished from the dug-out. With few chances and many bookings, culminating in a red card for Grays’ Ade Olayinka, the match was a stop-start affair with the Blues showing neat approach play without much goal threat and a workmanlike Chelmsford side only looking dangerous from set- pieces.
So, it was something of a surprise when in the 18th minute, a hesitant Blues defence allowed Helder Valdez in to score; in response, despite three good opportunities in the first half, Grays could not find the net. The second half continued in similar fashion until the dying moments, when the lively Gary Hooper popped up with the equalizer. Extra time was played and in the ensuing penalty shoot-out Joe Bruce and Cam Mawer failed to convert and the home side took the spoils.
