Grays Athletic 7 Scarborough 2 (Away)
Wed, April 19, 2006. Kick off: 7:45 PM
Match Report by Martin Candler
What a performance! Grays produced a masterclass of flowing football and lethal finishing at the McCain stadium that completely routed a struggling home side. Scarborough?s manager, Neil Redfearn said afterwards that the Blues are the best side in the Conference and few who witnessed the match would disagree with that judgement.
6th minute- Aaron McLean scores from 12 yards
17th minute- Michael Kightly converts a Glenn Poole centre
43rd minute- Glenn Poole?s lob is carried over the line by the despairing keeper, Dunbavin
3-0 at the break then the Seadogs give it the charge and McNiven drills past Bayes-55th minute
56th minute McLean responds with a coolly-taken goal
61st minute Simon Weaver heads in to make it 4-2
Grays turn up the burners and 71st minute Poole scores his second
80th and 90th minute Kightly completes his hat-trick to make the final score 7-2 to the Blues.
Grays, it must be said, could have had more, a Poole shot flashed just wide and Dennis Oli headed straight at Dunbavin. Scarborough tried to make a game of it in the second half by bombarding the Grays goal but were repulsed by resolute defending and lightening counter-attacks.
Manager Mark Stimson was his usual phlegmatic self after the game and insisted that although this was a fantastic win a further three points are needed to reach the Play-Off finals in May.
