Match Report by Martin Candler
On a stifling evening the game provided a useful work-out for the Blues against an Ipswich XI comprising mostly of their youth team. Grays virtually fielded two teams, one in the first half, the other in the second; a real old-fashioned probables and possibles! After ten minutes of sparring, Grays produced a goal of some quality. The ball was played quickly out of defence to Michael Kightly, who found the galloping Cam Mawer on the right, and his pin-point cross on the run was turned in expertly by the on-rushing Kightly.
Both sides continued to knock the ball around pleasingly but without true penetration. The same can be said for the second half which produced one more score and that belonged to Jamie Slabber in the 86th minute. Receiving a knock-down by John Turner on the edge of the box, he tuned and shot instantly past the despairing Ipswich keeper, Price; a class finish by a fit-looking Slabber.
