Aaron McLean‘s goal in the 63rd minute, his ninth of the season so far, settled a rather lack-lustre encounter against a struggling Crawley Town at the Broadfield Stadium. Grays started brightly enough and early on Lee Boylan was through on goal but was denied by a smart save by Crawley keeper, Ben Hamer, who then saved at his near post from McLean. Djoumin Sangere, impressing again, was just wide with a header and McLean unsuccessfully tried an ambitious 40-yarder after a slip by Michael Bostwick.
Not to be outdone, Crawley had two fine efforts themselves either side of half-time. Firstly, from a Gary Mills corner, Pat Sappleton hit the bar with a thumping header and then the influential Tony Scully hit the post after Scott Rendell‘s clever flick put him in on goal. Crawley were now in the ascendant but foundered on the twin defensive rocks, Sangere and skipper, Jamie Stuart. Then Grays struck, Michael Kightly robbing Danny Brown and passing to McLean who showed good composure in tucking the ball into the corner of the goal. Both Sub Jamie Slabber and McLean spurned inviting chances, and despite a desperate late charge by the home side, saw the game out to claim all three points.
Not a vintage performance by the Blues and after the match Frank Gray admitted that both he and the team were disappointed with the performance and would be looking for a bit more cohesion and passing accuracy in the games to come.
