Bank Holiday Weekend Preview
by Michael Parker

This August bank holiday weekend Grays Athletic have two games as the Ryman Premier League season continues. First up on Saturday the team travel around the M25 to face Hampton & Richmond Borough. Both teams go into the game still looking for their first win of the season and both teams could fancy their chances of getting it. Grays currently sit 19th in the early season table with 2 points and Hampton are currently 23rd without a point and are only off the bottom courtesy of goals scored.
Grays have had a tough start but can point to the fact that they are unbeaten in the last two games with 1-1 draws with Leatherhead and during the week away at Premier new boys, Witham Town. In that game Glen Little returned to the side and he could feature again to bolster the midfield. Jamie Guy scored his first goal since returning also in that match and should be available for the weekends games.
Hampton, like Grays, have had a tough start to the season and have lost every game. Their latest result during the week was a 2-0 reverse away to Maidstone United. As well as this they lost to league favourites Margate on the opening day and inbetweeners this they have twice conceded four goals in home games against Wingate & Finchley and also Witham Town.
The match takes place at Beveree Stadium, Beaver Close, Station Road, Hampton, TW12 2BX. The trust is running a coach to this game that is scheduled to leave The Oak in Lodge Lane at noon on Saturday 23rd August. Details of cost and spaces available can be found on the fans forum or through Colin Tillet.
Bank Holiday Monday usually sees a local derby match and this season is no different. Millfield will play host to Grays Athletic v AFC Hornchurch at 3pm in what is always an interesting encounter. The Urchins have faced the unusual situation of playing all of their august games away from home as work on new floodlights are being installed by stadium owners Havering Council. Their first game of the season was another all Essex affair in which they were edged out by East Thurrock at Rookery Hill. There has also been defeats at Kingstonian and a thumping 4-0 reverse in midweek up in Suffolk against Leiston. Their only point, at the time of writing, was a 2-2 draw with Lewes. On Saturday the Urchins travel to Leatherhead before their trip to MillField on the Monday. Despite this disappointing start, Hornchurch will have happy memories of playing away to Grays and scoring five last season although Grays gained revenge later in the season winning at Bridge Avenue.
Admission details for the game are below:
