RYAN MAHAL

After each first team match this season, the fans can vote for their Player of the Match.
Just go online to our website – www.graysathletic.co.uk – and click on the unofficial fans’ forum, log in or register and move to the Man of the Match section and place your vote. All our supporters are encouraged to join in, as at the end of each month the votes are added up and a Player of the Month is determined through the choices made by you.
During February we played four league games, two at home and two away, winning one, drawing two and losing one, scoring seven goals and conceding five. Your Man of the Match selections for each game were as follows:
Mildenhall (away) – lost 1-2 Callum Thompson
Maldon & Tiptree (home) drew 2 -2 Ryan Mahal
Witham Town (home) – won 4-1 Tommy Wade
Soham Town Rangers (away) – drew 0-0 Michael Finneran
Four players were in the running for the Player of the Month award and they polled a massive eighty-two per cent of all votes cast. In joint third place, it was our new signing, centre-half, Michael Finneran, who was voted Man of the Match in his second appearance in the away draw at Soham. Joining Michael in third place it was sixteen-year-old Callum Thompson, who after forcing his way into the starting line-up side with some excellent performances in January, was beginning to establish his position in the left-back berth. In February, he was voted Man of the Match in the 2-1 defeat at Mildenhall, but then sustained an ankle injury against Maldon & Tiptree, which has kept him out since. Runner-up was our new striker, Tommy Wade, who helped us salvage a late point with a debut goal against Maldon & Tiptree and followed this up with two first-half goals and a Man of the Match performance in the 4-1 win at home to Witham Town.
The clearest winner we have had this season, was defender/cum goalkeeper, Ryan Mahal with an impressive forty-three per cent of all votes cast in the month. His Man of the Match performance against Maldon & Tiptree, when he donned the goalkeeping gloves after Charlie Burns sustained a leg injury and our sub keeper, Joe Simmonds was not included on the bench as his initials were confused with our player-manager Jamie Stuart, was the highlight of a bizarre match. Ryan conceded two goals, but saved a certain third with his feet, before we came back to equalise with two late goals. He also received a good number of votes in the other three games in the month. Congratulations, Ryan on your first award this season!
David Barnes, Club Director and Fundraiser-in-Chief has kindly sponsored the bottle of bubbly, which he will present to Ryan before today’s match.
