Thamesmead Town 1 - 5 GAFC

Chris Jones18 Feb 2012 - 18:30

Blues got back to winning ways at Thamesmead this afternoon, scoring five goals in the process to delight the travelling faithful.

Recent signing Nathan Gordon went straight into the team, whilst James Bunn had to settle for a place on the bench.

Paul Olima scored the opener following good play from Joao Carlos. The Portuguese winger picked up the ball down the right, cut inside and laid the ball across to Olima who had time to take a touch before firing under the keeper to give the away side the lead.

Minutes later Gordon drilled a cross in from the right touchline towards the near post. Sam Mott in the Thamesmead goal managed to get a touch on it, but could only deflect it into the net to double the lead.

Ashley Proberts halved the lead from the penalty spot shortly after half time, but it wasn't long before Grays were celebrating the third goal. Carlos, who had a fine game, drifted past two defenders down the left before shooting. The keeper saved, but couldn't do anything as he deflected it back into the path of Carlos and it rebounded into the net.

As the rain became a torrential downpour, Olima scored his second of the game. An excellent freekick was delivered into the area and Olima headed in from close to the penalty spot. The win was complete when Anthony Ryan beat the offside trap and finished when one-on-one with the keeper.

That win keeps the Blues in 5th place, as Harlow in 4th won 5-3 at home to Cheshunt. Elsewhere in the league, the top two both won; Leiston 4-0 away at Great Wakering, and Enfield Town 3-1 at home to Heybridge Swifts.

The battle for the play offs continued beneath us, as Brentwood Town climbed into 6th spot on goal difference following a 5-1 win at home to Waltham Forest. AFC Sudbury and Tilbury are also on 48 points following today's results.

Next up for the Blues is a home game with Harlow Town next Saturday.
