The boys worked really hard today but could only find the back of the net once with a great shot from Lewis. All of the boys are good quality players but as 11 of them are new to the team, everyone's taking a little time getting used to each other.

Grays Athletic, playing without substitutes, played the third place team today, they went down 1-0 within the first first minute and found themselves 2-0 by half time, a change in the playing formation saw Grays come out with a more determined and positive approach to the game, they played some great free flowing football and found the back of the net on 79 minutes, if we had a few more minutes we would have levelled the scoreline.

Half time Grays 1 - 0 Tigers

Grays held onto the lead until 2 minutes from full time. A long ball over the top catching them out once again.

Having dropped 8 of the last 9 available points Grays will need to dig deep into the reserves of Team spirit and passing football of old if they are to pose a realistic title challenge this season.

The girls went out and put an outstanding performance on which gave them the lead of 4-O at half time but they kept on playing their passing football to have a final score of 9-0 the girls played this team last year and only beat them 1-0 so it shows how much they have come on this year so far

The final was over by half time as Grays lead 2-0 before the break. All the boys played their part in the success and their joy at the end was etched on their faces. To some the result was even better as the Pumfrett twins played against many of their school class mates and earned the bragging rights for monday morning. Edmunds also took great joy in scoring a brace against his former team Aveley, one of the goals a brilliant bullet header from a corner.

The boys look forward to defending their crown next year.

Waltham Forest Youth 2 Grays Athletic 3
Goalscorers: Price, Klessa-Smith, Edmunds.

After securing a winners trophy in a tournament less than 24 hours previously it was back to the bread and butter of the league for the boys today. An early start saw us travel to Walthamstow for a match against unbeaten Waltham Forest Youth. The boys showed no ill effects from the strenuous workout from the day before and were soon in the lead when Price knocked the ball away after some neat work on the wing by S.Pumfrett. Klessa-Smith doubled the lead when he found the net from a tight angle and the team were looking good. Waltham Forest though were fast on the attack and scored with a cool finish after a great run past our defence. The boys came out for the second half and by this time the weather had took a turn for the worst. The rain sodden Grays fans spirits were lifted again when Edmunds ran onto a through ball and neatly tucked it away. Waltham Forest wouldn't lie down and grabbed a second from a low shot which found the bottom corner. The game was nip and tuck but the boys held out for another 3 points which sees them secure top spot in the league for at least another week. The game was played in a great spirit and both sets of supporters appreciated the fair play of both teams.

Grays Athletic Blue 4 Cricketers Horndon 0
Goalscorers: Jex(3), Gould

A Jex hat-trick and a Gould effort kept up “Blues” unbeaten record. Although the quality of passing, particularly in the first half, did not match that of previous games, Grays still dominated, and with Hubbard and Harrison outstanding at the back and Bunn making a couple of excellent stops Grays were never really in any danger of dropping points.

The boys had a flying start to todays game after being on a loosing streak, the boys came out with their heads held high and managed to secure a draw. The boys went into half time being the better team, with the score being 0 - 0 even after some great chances but they could not put it in the back of the net.
Second half, the boys came out fighting and 10 minutes in with a goal from J. Smith (his first this season) see Grays go 1 - 0 up. Brentwood being a strong team came straight back at us, Charlie made the save but the rebound went in.
Well done to all the boys. Keep it up, the WIN will come!!!!

Buckhurst Hill 5 Grays Athletic Youth 0

Grays knew before the match that there were only ever going to be 8 or 9 players available for this match.
Despite this, when asked, the boys elected to play it rather than concede the points.
The 9 boys that turned up and played today can be proud to wear the badge of Grays.

Although outnumbered, Grays pressed, but the ball continually came back at them. Buckhurst Hill resorting to playing long balls over the top to go into a 2 - 0 lead. A volleyed goal from a corner was the only moment of lapsed Grays concentration in the first half.

Buckhurst Hill added another goal to go 4 - 0 up

Half time Buckhurst hill 4 - 0 Grays Athletic Youth

The Grays performance in the second half was spirited, coming close on a couple of occasions to scoring.

Buckhurst Hill showed their respect by never leaving less than 3 men back despite being at a 2 man advantage.

Constant pressure and tired legs resulted in Buckhurst Hill scoring the solitary goal in the second half, a rare escape from their own half.

The rematch (with 11 boys each hopefully) should be an interesting affair.

Grays Girls had to dig in hard for the result with only being 1-0 up at half time thanks to Prichard the Wildkatz leveled the score early in the secone half but the girls stepped up a gear giving themselves a handful of chances before they added to the scoresheet far a 2-1 victory.

Signet United 1 Grays Athletic 7
Goalscorers: Ryan.B(4), Ryan.S(2), John.A

Grays Athletic Under 11's were away to Signet United. We had another slow start but eventually the goals slowly came! The 1st scored by Ryan B (1 on 1 with the keeper) and the 2nd by Ryan S (a cracking left footer). This was how the 1st half ended up. The 2nd half seemed to have more pace by both teams and Ryan B scored another 2 goals to make it 4 - 0 to Grays. Signet then scored making it 1 - 4, but 3 more goals came from Grays - Ryan B, Ryan S and a goal from John A. We were without our normal goal keeper for the game so it was up to Rob (our tallest boy and team captain!!) to wear the number 1 shirt for the game. Rob done an excellent job in keeping the goal keeping area covered throughout the game. All in all a good game played by both teams and the final score was 1 - 7.

U10 Friendly (Saturday 20th Oct)

Grays Athletic Yellows 3 Grays Athletic Blues 2
Goalscorers: Price, Stophe, Edmunds, Gianni (2)

This friendly was arranged as the Blues had a free weekend.
The Yellows won for the second successive game between the 2 teams , winning 3-1 last year.
The Blues took the lead from a strike by Gianni but the Yellows soon equalised through a solo effort from Price.
Stopher put the Yellows into the lead with a sweet left foot drive after Klessa-Smith had hit the crossbar. Edmunds struck the third after a cutting pass between two defenders by S.Pumfrett. Gianni got his second goal from close range near the end but the Yellows held out.

U10 Echo League Trophy 2nd Round

Grays Athletic 3 Bealonians A 3 (Bealonians winning 3-2 on penalties)
Goalscorers: Price (2) Klessa-Smith (pen)

Grays were dumped out of the cup despite a spirited second half comeback.
Unbeaten Bealonians showed why they were 2 divisions higher with a solid first half display going into the break 2-0 up. Bealonians added a third early in the second half and Grays were looking at a convincing defeat.
Price added what we thought was a consolation goal from close range but Grays pulled a second back from a Klessa-Smith penalty shortly afterwards. The comeback was completed when Price struck home a fierce low shot from outside the opposing penalty area. The game ended all square but had to be decided by penalties. Unfortunately Grays missed 3 penalties and their cup run for this year was over. All credit to the boys for a great effort in the second half.

Stanford Wanderers 8 Grays Athletic 1
Goalscorer: Ero

Once again Grays Athletic came off as a poor second, they have yet to win a game this season, having taken the lead after 4 minutes the team lost their formation and footing and went dow 3-1 by the first half, second half they switched from 3-5-2 to a more defensive 4-5-1 but still let Stanford dominate in sections and bag a further 5 goals, Manager Kevn Lamb is totaly bemused by this team, they play some great football with flair but continue to get broken down through the midfield, it seem as though we have 4 defenders and everyone else wants to be a striker, looks like it is back to the drawing board with the team.

Grays Athletic 3 Interwood 4
Goalscorers: Rykie, Own goal, Onye

Grays lost their first match of this season.
Interwood started the match at 100mph. Grays were still asleep.

Interwood were 3 - 0 up and coasting by half time, although not realising that it was 35 minutes each way cost grays dearly as 2 of the goals were conceded in the last 5 minutes of the first half.

The second half was a much better affair.

Rykie scored within 4 minutes of the restart, a fine run and shot from the right. The keeper got a hand to it but couldn‘t prevent the goal.

A free kick on 22 minutes saw a scramble in the box, with Onye applying the finish.

On 28 minutes another free kick was awarded to Grays, with Interwood clearly rattled. Rykie took the free kick, a bit of ping pong saw the ball in the net for Grays, Shay having the last Grays touch, but an Interwood own goal.

Not learning the lessons of the long first half Grays conceded number 4. Interwood by now resorting to hopeful long balls, and on 32 minutes it paid off.

League Cup, Round 1

Grays Athletic 4 Lee Chapel Youth 0
Goalscorers: Ryan(2), John.A, Jacob

Grays played a great 1st half of football, scoring 3 goals. 2 goals scored again by striker Ryan (1 with his foot and the other with his head!) and John A scoring his 1st competitive goal for the team. The 2nd half was a bit muted by Grays but Lee Chapel came out and played on with a lot of spirit and good defending. Jacob scored Grays‘ 4th goal just before full time. They boys know they need to play better football if they are to go further in this competition. However, today they beat the team who knocked them out in the 1st round of the cup this time last year - so things can only get better!!!

Grays Athletic 9 Woodford Youth "C" 1
Goalscorers: Price (hat-trick) Edmunds (2) Stopher (2) Bearman, Klessa-Smith

Well what can i say about this fixture. The Grays team produced their best ever score against a previously unbeaten Woodford team (4 wins and 1 draw). All the boys did exceptionally well today with some of the passing moves outstanding at times, especially the wing play.

Grays scored after 1 minute when Bearman tucked away the ball at the far post. Edmunds then got a second 9 minutes in after a Bearman shot was parried by the keeper. Edmunds then set up Price for the third after 11 minutes. Grays then scored 2 in 2 minutes from Stopher and Price both being laid on by S.Pumfrett. Woodford scored from a breakaway but Grays soon added to the score when Price completed his hat-trick a minute before half-time. There was no let up from the boys in the second half with Stopher adding a seventh 2 minutes in after being allowed to run through the defence before shooting hard and low. S.Pumfrett laid on Edmunds' second after 9 minutes and Klessa-Smith completed the rout after 14 minutes from a great Edmunds run down the wing.

Man-of-the Match was awarded to the whole team for their fantastic effort today, keep it up !

Grays Athletic Blue 8 FC Redwing Hawks 0
Goalscorers: Gould (4), Jex (2), Bundock, Birch

Grays continued their impressive start to the season with a convincing win over FC Redwing. Four goals in either half, including a “special” effort from Gould, were due reward for the abundance of possession Grays had throughout. Some of the intricate passing, especially in the final third, was outstanding and with Chegwidden and Harrison providing a solid defensive base Grays confidence is growing week by week.

Grays Athletic were knocked out of the county cup following a close fought battle for 70 minutes, Grays went 2-0 down in the first 20 minutes of the game even though they looked the more dominant team, 4 minutes later Johnson grabbed the first of his brace, Wickford then struck again against the run of play to make it 3-1 then on 37 minutes Umfreville latched onto a ball on the left of the keeper and placed it over his head into the net, Grays went into half time 3-2 down.
Within 12 minutes of the second half Johnson struck again to level the scores, the game swung from side to side and was a great entertaining match until a strange 3 minutes when Wickford bagged 3 goals one minute apart.
Grays never gave up and kept chasing the goals but were unfortunate not to get back into the game.
A fantastic game between two sides who showed great sportsmanship on and off the feild.

Grays Athletic 4 Thurrock 2
Goalscorers: Josh, Tyler, Onye, Aaron

Grays had a wake call when they conceded a goal within the first 2 minutes of this game.
However, the boys strength and character shone through and they equalised a minute later, Josh beating the offside trap to slot the ball home.
A minute later Grays increased the lead with Tyler striking a free kick from about 25 yards into the top corner.
With a minute to go in the first half Grays went 3 up. A well taken free kick was floated over the Thurrock wall. Three Gray’s players beat the offside trap. Onye picked up the loose ball and calmly slotted it in.
Half time score:- Grays 3 - 1 Thurrock A
The second half was a much tighter affair.
Grays left it until 3 minutes to go when Aaron struck a free kick on the edge of the ‘D’ into the net, the Thurrock keeper may have felt he could have done better in dealing with it.
With seconds to go Thurrock were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Grays area. The resulting strike was hit hard and low and evaded all in front of it to go in.

However, we were soon on the back foot after LTD took an early lead after only 5 minutes. However, 3 goals scored by Ryan and Alex saving an LTD penalty meant we were 3 - 1 up at half time.

The 2nd half was much of the same with Grays playing good football and 3 more goals followed. Ryan scored 2 more great goals and Aron then scoring a penalty to make it a final score of 6 - 1.

A penalty was tucked away by Price after a Senrab defender handled in the area. The second half was nip and tuck with Senrab throwing defenders up to try and gain the equaliser.
