This weekend, Grays Athletic make one of our longest journeys of the league season, to the Norfolk Broads, for a visit to Wroxham FC.
The Yachtsmen are one of our newer opponents at this level. We have played each other in three previous seasons at this level - once more than a decade ago and then again in the last two campaigns, since Wroxham returned to this level from the Eastern League. Grays’ record against tomorrow;s opponents is a very positive one, with four wins and two draws in the six competitive games. The two games with points shared both came last season, when both encounters finished 1-1. At Trafford Park in October, two first half goals kept the sides level, whilst in February, a last gasp goal from Elliott Sartorius, rescued a point for the Blues.
This season has not been a kind one to Wroxham so far, with the club sitting at the foot of the table. Their only point gained was a 1-1 draw at home to Redbridge. They have though faced some challenging fixtures, with defeats to high-flying Bury Town, Brentwood Town and Felixstowe & Walton - against whom the Yachtsmen were leading 1-0 until almost the 90 minute mark but then conceded twice in the dying moments of the game.
The cup competitions have sadly been no more productive, with a defeat at the first stage in both main cups, against Walsham-le-Willows in the FA Cup (after a replay) and Haringey Borough in the FA Trophy.
But at this early stage of the season and with the league still very tight all round and nothing can be taken for granted. In past years, we have always received a very warm welcome in Norfolk and look forward to renewing old acquaintances again.
The game takes place at Wroxham’s Trafford Park stadium, Skinners Lane, Wroxham NR12 8SJ. Please note that the ground is situated outside of the town and away from local facilities, although of course there is the usual catering and bar at the ground.
Come on you Blues !
