In 1942 Grays met Leyton in the final of the Grays & District Challenge Cup Final losing heavily 7-0, curiously this game was played at Green Pond Lane the home of Walthamstow Avenue.

One name to note in the line up is Harry Ayres who hailed from Redcar in the North East but eventually settled in Grays.He later managed both Grays and Tilbury, Harry played professionally firstly for Fulham and later Gillingham making over 130 football league appearances.
