Grays Athletic Ladies pulled off a remarkable comeback at home, overturning a three-goal deficit to defeat Broomfield Ladies 4–3 in a game that showed both the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

The opening stages were far from Grays’ usual standards. The tempo was flat, intensity missing, and Broomfield were first to everything — winning every duel, every header, every loose ball. It didn’t take long for the visitors to take advantage, earning a free kick on the edge of the box. The shot struck a Grays defender in the wall, and the referee deemed it a handball. Broomfield converted the penalty to take the lead, then added two more before the break as Grays struggled to find rhythm.

Trailing 3–0 at half-time, some strong words were needed. The message was simple — show desire, work harder, believe. A slight formation tweak helped turn the tide, and the team came out fighting.

The response was immediate. Lois pulled one back at the back post from a corner to spark belief. Grays started to control the game, pressing higher and moving the ball with purpose. Kara then took centre stage, striking twice in quick succession to level it at 3–3 — her sharpness causing constant problems.

With the home crowd behind them and momentum fully shifted, Lainey completed the comeback with a calm finish to make it 4–3, sending Hendersons into celebration.

A tale of two halves — a sluggish start followed by an inspired turnaround that showcased character and refusal to give up. Work now turns to sharpening from the first whistle ahead of next Sunday’s Essex Cup tie against Bowers & Pitsea.
