The blues needed a response following their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Margate the previous week, and thats exactly what the supporters got at Mill Field on Saturday. On an extremely chilly December afternoon, Jody Browns boys had a point to prove and were looking to bounce back in their last home game before Christmas.
In form striker Freddie Ladapo led the line against Witham Town and from the start he caused their defence some problems with his pace and skill. The blues started the game well with some lovely one touch football, Ladapo came close in the opening minutes with a shot on goal just going wide of the post. However Witham are no easy push over and they counter attacked well to cause the Grays defence some concern. Once again goalkeeper Conor Cough was called into action tipping the ball over the bar from a strike from on loan Chelmsford striker Luke Callander.
Witham defender Conor Mead and blues Joao Carlos were cautioned in the 38th minute for a tussle on the far side of the pitch, and only moments later Mead saw red as he brought down Carlos. The ref had no choice but to send Mead off for his second bookable offence.
The blues started the second half on the front foot as the extra man started to come into effect. Ladapo and DD were causing the Witham defence some problems and on the 52nd minute the deadlock was broken as club captain Kenny Beaney fired home to make it 1-0 to the blues. Only minutes later Freddie Ladapo scored a fantastic goal to make it 2-0 to the blues as they started to take control the game.
On the 55th minute Aaron Wickham came on for Joao Cralos and he made an immediate impact on the game. Wickhams pace started to cause the Witham Midfield and defence some problems and his interlink play in midfield was encouraging to watch. It was from a Aaron Wickham cross that Dumebi Dumaka was able to latch onto to make it 3-0 to Grays in the 62nd minute.
Jordan Wilson replaced Aaron Best in the 67th minute as manager Jody Brown looked to finish the game off. The blues continued to press the ever tiring Witham defence and the final goal came in the 86th minute as Freddie Ladapo sneaked the ball through the keepers legs to get his second of the game and make it 4-0 to the blues.
After the game 1st team coach Garth Good said ; "I would talk about our defensive resilience today". "Witham were unable to ask many questions".
The win against Witham lifts the blues one place into 10th position.
Next up for the blues is VCD Athletic away on Tuesday night.
