Grays bring down the curtain on another season with a home fixture at Tilbury against Ipswich Wanderers. A season that began with such hope and excitement but turned into a struggle for survival at the wrong end of the table.
Ipswich have been in a similar situation for much of the season, their first ever at this level. Along the way, there have been some impressive results (strangely most often against other Suffolk teams ) - victory against eventual champions Lowestoft Town and a draw away at Felixstowe & Walton being the highlights. But too often the goals against have counted against them. They currently sit just one place below Grays in the recent form table, with one win and two draws in their last six games. The topsy-turvy nature of their season was summed up in the last few days, when a fine midweek 4-1 away win at Redbridge was followed just a few days later by a 5-0 home reverse against the same opposition.
Our return fixture, earlier in the season, in late January, at Humber Doucy Lane turned out to be one of Grays’ best performances of the year. First half goals from Billy Crook and Codey Cosgrave were followed by two more after the break by Charlie Stimson and Cosgrave again. Only a very late consolation from Rashid Salau broke the Grays defence and the 4-1 scoreline was a well-deserved one that night for the Blues.
Grays have turned this final game of the season into a Community Day, with visitors expected from a range of local schools and organisations, with a host of activities available as well as what promises to be a close encounter of the final kind.
With thanks to all the Blues supporters who turn up week-in-week-out to cheer the lads on. Sometimes, it’s been tough going - but no-one said it was going to be easy. Let’s give them one last hurrah !
Come on you Blues !
