This Thursday evening under the lights, Grays Athletic make the short journey into north-east London for another attempt to play the away league fixture at Redbridge FC. Let’s hope the weather is kind this time.
Our opponents’ highlight of the season came recently, when they were victorious in the final of the Essex Senior Cup, overturning the odds against League 2 side, Colchester United. With the score 1-1 at full time, the game went to penalties and it was ex-Blue, Lewis Clark, who scored the decisive spot kick, to seal the trophy. Congratulations to the Motormen on this great achievement.
Our previous league meeting was in just mid-March, when Grays came out 2-0 winners, with a goal in each half from Matas Skarna and Aron Gordon.
Redbridge’s recent league form has shown something of an upturn, with two wins, against Stowmarket and earlier this week against Basildon, together with two goalless draws. This puts them fourth in the current form table, with a goal difference in their last six games of +6.
The Motormen are in the middle of a string of matches, coming thick and fast, seeking to complete their fixture list by the close of the season. I can remember when we had a similar situation a few years ago - it takes its toll on players, staff and spectators alike - and we wish them well in getting through to the end.
The Blues themselves come into this game on the back of two difficult fixtures against high-flying opposition, but will be under no illusion of the challenge that Redbridge will present.
The game takes place at Oakside, on Station Rd, Barkingside, IG6 1NB. Barkingside station on the Central Line is nearby.
Come on you Blues !
