Blues travel to Canvey Island managed by ex Blues boss Mark Bentley on Saturday in what will be another crucial game with both teams locked on 32 points, crucially the outcome could be pivotal for both club's future prospects this season. Matches between the teams have always been fiercely contested with memories of the epic battles when the clubs featured in the top tier of non league football, no doubt tomorrow will continue the theme.
The Gulls league campaign has been similar to Blues this season - inconsistent. A promising start saw them lose only one of their first six league games but from October through to December they recorded just three wins leaving them in the bottom half of the table. Results were not helped by a number of key departures and arrivals which obviously had an unsettling effect on the squad. 2019 has seen an up turn in fortunes, the Gulls remaining unbeaten with three wins and a draw suggesting Benno has managed to steady the ship now he has a settled squad. Current leading league goalscorer is the experienced Martin Tuohy with six.
Blues will go into the game full of confidence after a sparkling display against their landlords Aveley on Wednesday evening. Racing into a three goal lead with goals of pure quality they just failed to hold on to their lead conceding what was the winning goal for the Millers just three minutes from time. Although disappointing the match proved on their day Blues are a match for any team in this league if they can just add more consistency then they can still challenge for a play off place. For the first time in many weeks Jamie Stuart should have a full squad to choose from which could prove team selection a problem but a nice one for him.
