After last Saturdays impressive win at Heybridge Blues turn their attention to the new look Velocity Cup when they travel to Mayesbrook Park to meet Barking tonight. A new format for the competition has been introduced this season where all clubs below BetVictor Premier Division have been split into ten groups on a regional basis. Blues have been grouped with Aveley, Barking, Brentwood, Romford and Waltham Abbey. In the event of a draw after 90 minutes each club will be awarded one point, no extra time will be played - the tie decided by a penalty shoot out with the winning team awarded a further point. Clubs will play each other once either home or away , can name five substitutes and use them all. The winners of the ten groups will then join the 22 Premier clubs when the competition reverts to a knock out formula.
Barking having moved over to the BetVictor South Central League have not had the best of starts with one draw and three defeats from their opening fixtures but can point to a creditable victory over Aveley in the Emirates FA Cup. No doubt like Blues they will have one eye on their upcoming FA Cup encounter away to Kings Langley.
Blues will be brimming with confidence after their well deserved win at one of the title favourites Heybridge Swifts featuring a stunning 35 yard strike from Mitch Hahn. No doubt manager Jim Cooper will be concentrating his efforts on the cup meeting with March Town on Saturday which could play a part in his team selection. Blues have made an encouraging start to the season and will be looking to start their Velocity Cup campaign with a win at this group stage.
