Ryman Premier
Enfield Town 2 v 2 Grays Athletic
A 95th minute strike by Grays Ath striker Freddie Ladapo salvaged a point for Grays Ath in an otherwise listless performance at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
This was a real struggle for Grays who did not play badly, they just never really got going. Each player played well in patches but nobody stood out nor did anyone really dominate.
For a change, Grays Ath had a nice surface to play with unfortunately, the pitch was sodden with water after constant rain early on.
In the 4th minute, Freddie Ladapo produced a neat turn and run near the box. It came to nothing but it showed his class.
Early on the game looked like the conditions may dictate. Maltese international midfielder, Joseph Zefara impressed with his runs and energy. His snap shot in the 18th minute from outside the box nearly went in.
Enfield were a robust team that Grays were finding hard to break down. Enfield started to exert pressure with a number of corners.
They made the breakthrough in the 31st minute with solo effort from Corey Whiteley who glided effortlessly into the box before striking home.
Grays equalised just four minutes later when the outstanding Ladapo found space in the box to drill the ball home.
This warmed up into an entertaining game of football but partly because both defences were not playing that well.
A somewhat dubious penalty saw Enfield re-take the lead in the 50th minute after an alleged shove in the area. Enfield striker, Nathan Livings made no mistake from the spot.
Enfield were going for the third and Grays needed to inject some urgency in their play.
Grays did not seem to have any answers. .They kept trying but nothing seemed to be working.
Grays looked like a group of individuals. It must have been frustrating for the fans because they weren't playing badly, they just weren't firing at all.
Boss Jody Brown put all three subs on but again, nothing was happening. Meanwhile, Enfield, were happy playing possession football and looked like they could score more.
But lo and behold, in the 95th minute, Freddie Ladapo ran onto a through ball and tucked the ball under the keeper to give Grays Ath a point.
They will go into next weeks encounter in the FA Cup knowing that they must become a unit and fast. The defence still looks suspect and the midfield were outgunned by Enfield for large parts of the game. Still, all that and they are three points off the play-offs.
