The Blues completed what turned out to be a bad week with this defeat at the hands of the leagues form team in a highly charged tussle.

Enfield started the game very brightly when Adam Wallace ran clear only for the ball to be cleared by Lee Flynn. Within seconds a similar break saw Wallace run clear at Andy Hall only to be tripped and the ref to award a penalty. Liam Hope slotted the ball home to leave Grays chasing the game.

Hope ran clear for Craig Pope to clear the danger, then Dave Kendall ran goal ward only to see his weak shot roll wide as the Blues struggled to get into the match. The early forays by Grays were easily cleared by Towns well organised defence as both Joao Carlos and Anthony Ryan had runs easily closed down. Kendall headed over from a corner and a Hope shot was held by Hall as the home side piled on the pressure on a shell-shocked Blues defence.

Slowly Grays began to gain their composure and take the game to the opposition as Carlos and Pope started to take the ball wide on the wings. A Flynn free-kick was cleared by Dean Pennant and a Carlos cross was tamely put wide by Ryan as the away team pushed forward. A corner from Harry Agombar was cleared then Carlos hit a solid shot wide but it was a Bradley Thomas run that finally saw Grays equalise. Thomas found Carlos clear, his run and pass went to Pope and his cross was slotted home by Ryan in an overall fine move with just over five minutes left. T

he Blues kept pushing and Louis Dennis saw his shot go high and Agombar wiggled into space to see his shot roll just wide. With seconds to go an ugly clash between Thomas and Leon Osei saw both get yellow cards but Osei had to walk as it was his second of the half. The half ended with honours even but with Grays moving forward.

The Blues came out in the second half looking to make their extra man count with some excellent one touch passing. Kenny Beaney, Dennis, Flynn and Carlos all looked assured as they moved the ball forward and Flynn crossed for Carlos to head just over the bar. Grays thought they had their noses in front when Carlos tapped in an Agombar free-kick only to be ruled offside then Agombar hit another free-kick just over as the Blues kept up the pressure on a hard working Enfield team.

A well struck free-kick from Agombar hit the cross bar with Noel Imber beaten but Pope failed to push the loose ball home. Dennis and Beaney were subbed by David Cowley and Joe Sweeney as Grays pushed for the winner and Sweeney almost got his head to a Carlos cross only for Imber to hold the ball.

A second yellow for Thomas saw the defender sent off to even the numbers and the gaps appeared in the Blues defence as they flooded the Enfield half looking to snatch the game. A corner for the home team saw Hope head goal wards for Hall to hold but with time almost up Wallace found space on the wing to cross to Jon Moore whose looping header went over Hall’s out-stretched arms to settle in the net to give Enfield an unlikely victory. In all, it was a disappointing result for the Blues who missed many chances to finish off the game.
