In an even opening spell both teams looked to be testing each other as both sides wide players probed the wings looking for openings. Nathan Gordon linked in well with Danny Bunce and Lee Flynn on the left and found Kenny Beaney in the middle but his shot was blocked by Louis Lavers but it was Jay Gershfield who had the first real chance when he strode through the Blues defence only for George Kamurasi to hold his shot.
A corner for Bar Joe O’Brien hit his shot goal-ward only for Beaney to clear off the line. Anton Agdomar was always a danger and Flynn had to be at his best to stay with his pace. After an even first quarter of the game Grays upped the pace and Gordon ran wide only to see his low shot deflected out for a corner. Bunce hit a high cross in and found Jake Hall running in to head past the home defence to give the Blues the lead.
It was all Grays as they pushed home their advantage and would have increased their lead had it not been for the heroics of Burbridge in the Bar goal. He bravely blocked a Grant Cooper shot and tipped over a dipping Flynn cross. Gordon and Bunce hit a series of one/twos to work an opening but Gordon shot wide when clear. The home defence were on the back foot as Gordon looked difficult to contain and his pass to Beaney saw the home stopper tip over his shot. Bunce picked up a loose ball to run at the home goal line and hit a low shot across goal for Gordon to tap in from three yards to double the lead with ten minutes to go.
A series of corners and free kicks saw Grays push but they were unable to add to their goal tally as they ran off at half time in control.
Grays started quickly after the break with Bunce chasing hard and his pass to Harry Agombar was pin point and deserved a better finish as Agombar’s shot was charged down and the rebound was hit over by Bunce. Bunce and Flynn combined well to work a way through on the left and push the ball through to James Bunn, an intelligent touch saw him turn his defender and slot the ball low into the net to make it three with less than ten minutes of the half gone.
Grays were still flying and Flynn took a pass from Bunce to hit a shot just wide of the post as the Blues tried to kill off the match. The Grays players were starting to tire after their heroics and had to gather themselves when potters Bar started to get back into the game as first O’Brien and then Gershfield had shots blocked. The Blues cause was compounded when Junior Baker had to go off injured to be replaced by Paul Olima but Bar scored when a free-kick by O’Brien was deflected into the net by Kamurasi with twenty five minutes to go to reduce the arrears.
Grays defended in numbers as their pace dropped and Agdomar and Magwood chased down the wide positions. Joe Sweeney came on for Bunn and was unlucky to see his well struck header held by Burbridge. Potters bar were unable to add to their score despite being on top for the remainder of the game and Grays ran out worthy 3 – 1 winners to make it three wins on the bounce and maintain their play-off push.
