On a day that saw three matches postponed in the league due to waterlogged pitches, including at leaders Leiston, there was no trouble at RH, and the Club are grateful to the work performed by Mick Stephens, groundsman at East Thurrock United.
Manager Hakan Hayrettin changed his formation to 4-4-2 as Jean-Michel Sigere, Joe Sweeney and Bradley Thomas all returned to the starting line-up.
In wet and windy conditions, it was never going to be a game too pleasing on the eye, but despite that, it was a fairly entertaining, if goalless first half. Daniel Bunce and Joao Carlos both had efforts in the first period; however neither of them could challenge Noel Imber in the Enfield goal.
The only other incident of note in the first half was Bradley Thomas receiving a yellow shortly before the break for a foul on former Blue Dean Pennant.
Two minutes into the second half Blues had their clearest chance with Joe Sweeney being played in by Jean-Michel Sigere. Unsure of whether he was onside, Sweeney took a moment to steady himself before closing down on goal. It seemed to be that indecision which cost him as he then blazed high when one-on-one with the keeper.
Moments later came then turning point in the match, as Thomas saw red for a handball in the area, and Liam Hope scored the resultant penalty. Tony Tucker had no chance with the spot kick as Hope buried it in the top left of the goal.
Bunce had another effort on goal which was saved well by Imber at the near post, before Hope went close at the other end with a well executed lob.
Both sides made substitutions, however it was Enfield’s who were the more effective as Tyler Campbell and Walid Matata scored in the final ten minutes to put the gloss on Town’s win.
The result meant that Enfield go one point clear at the top, with Leiston due to play their postponed match against Potters Bar Town on Sunday or Monday. Blues await the outcome of that match as they head to the second placed side in the play-off semi final which is expected to take place on Tuesday evening.
